Joel Edgerton joins Katey Rich, The Ankler’s awards editor and host of the Prestige Junkie podcast, for a wide-ranging conversation about his career, including his work as the executive producer and star of Netflix’s Train Dreams, which is making its international premiere at TIFF 50. In a story adapted from Denis Johnson’s novella by Greg Kwedar and the film’s director Clint Bentley, Edgerton gives one of the most moving performances of his career as a man building a life for himself and his family in the Pacific Northwest at the beginning of the 20th century. But his stellar performance should come as no surprise. From his breakout work in The Square, directed by his brother Nash, to his performances for directors like Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby), Barry Jenkins (The Underground Railroad) and Paul Schrader (The Master Gardener), Edgerton has developed an impressive and diverse resume not only as an actor, but as someone with keen insight into the industry that makes it all possible.
