Based on the true story of Marguerite de la Rocque, this is the galvanizing account of a young French noblewoman in the 16th century, who was banished to a desolate island en route to the New World when her high-ranking husband-to-be discovered she was pregnant. Unwilling to hear of her violent assault by one of his soldiers, Marguerite is condemned to the island with her maid — and her rapist. With little provisions and a life growing inside her, Marguerite must battle the elements and wills to survive, while her oppressor brings with him his patriarchal ideals and religious fervor to this “Island of Demons.” The stark beauty of this foreboding landscape is inescapably cinematic, and Marguerite’s piercing defiance truly a tale for the ages.
