Daniel Brennan (Matthew Gurney) has been in prison for a decade: his sentence for the seemingly irrational murder of a close friend. When he was incarcerated, Daniel’s family — and his wider Deaf community on the outside — mourned the loss of the man they thought they knew. However, now that Daniel is set to be paroled, they question whether they want to re-engage with him.

Upon his release, Daniel finds his carefully constructed formula for existing in exile is challenged immediately by his estranged daughter, Carly (Lara Peake, TIFF ’23’s How to Have Sex). A child when her father went into prison, Carly is now a young woman, full of resentment and frustration, especially when Daniel turns up unannounced to try and reconcile a deeply fractured relationship. Carly’s skeptical curiosity about her father deepens as it becomes clear that he’s on a path towards some form of revenge — though on whom and for what remains obscured.

Daniel’s pursuit of some form of justice places him on a collision course with his late friend’s widow, Christine (Anne-Marie Duff, Bad Sisters), who desperately wants answers of her own — answers Daniel seems desperate to conceal.

Featuring powerful performances from the central cast, as well as memorable turns from Eddie Marsan and Rose Ayling-Ellis, Reunion places us squarely in the centre of a thriller radiating with longing, regret, and the resolve to put old wrongs right.
